Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about the practice, technology and relationship.

The engagement is designed for a company that wants dependable data assets without recruiting or managing a conventional data team.

The engagement

Understanding the model.

What is a Managed Data Practice?

It is an outsourced, ongoing capability for building, operating, governing and improving your company’s data assets. It can include integrations, pipelines, data platforms, business definitions, quality controls, reporting, security, documentation and support.

Do we need an internal data team?

No. That is central to the offer. I personally provide the agreed data leadership, architecture, engineering, analytics, governance and ongoing operation. Your existing employees continue doing their normal jobs; they provide business context and decisions when needed, not technical delivery.

How is this different from a fractional Chief Data Officer?

A conventional fractional CDO primarily provides strategy, governance and executive leadership. This practice combines senior judgment with hands-on implementation and ongoing operation. I personally build and maintain the core capability.

How is this different from a consulting project?

A project usually delivers a defined result and ends. This relationship establishes the foundation and remains responsible for maintaining, supporting and improving it over time.

What types of companies are a good fit?

Established organizations with multiple systems, recurring management reporting and valuable operational information—but little or no internal data capability. The strongest alignment is with energy, utilities, industrial services, construction, infrastructure and other operationally complex businesses.

How does an engagement begin?

We begin with a private discussion about the decisions that need better information, existing systems, current reporting and desired timing. If there is a fit, the first scope creates a practical foundation around one or more valuable priorities.

Technology and ownership

Your assets, in your environment.

Which technologies do you work with?

My strongest experience is in the Microsoft ecosystem, including Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure SQL, SQL Server, Power Platform and APIs. I also integrate information from ERP, finance, SharePoint, operational, field-service and specialized applications. Technology selection follows business need.

Do we need an existing data platform?

No. I assess what exists and determine what should be retained, simplified, improved or replaced. The engagement does not begin with a predetermined technology purchase.

Will our organization own the solutions and data assets?

Yes. Your organization retains ownership of its data, environments, code, pipelines, models, reports and documentation, subject to clearly disclosed third-party licences.

Can you work with our existing ERP and applications?

Usually. Feasibility depends on available APIs, database access, export capabilities, security requirements and vendor cooperation. The objective is to obtain more value from existing systems rather than replace useful applications unnecessarily.

Do you provide AI solutions?

AI can be considered when it solves a justified business problem. The first priority is ensuring that the underlying data, context, quality, access and governance are suitable. AI is a possible use of a reliable data foundation—not the centre of every engagement.

Working with Uelber

Personal delivery and responsible continuity.

Who performs the work?

I personally lead and perform the core strategy, architecture, engineering, analytics, governance, documentation and improvement work. If specialized or additional capacity is ever required, it is discussed and approved before another person becomes involved.

What participation is required from our company?

You do not need to supply or manage technical staff. I need one business decision-maker, appropriate access to systems and occasional input from employees who understand the processes and information involved. I own the agreed technical implementation and ongoing operation.

What happens if Uelber is unavailable?

The practice is designed with client-owned environments, controlled credentials, source control, deployment records, technical documentation, operating procedures and recoverable configurations. Specific continuity and support requirements are agreed according to the importance of the managed systems.

How do you protect confidential information?

Access follows least-privilege principles and remains in client-controlled environments wherever practical. Confidentiality, credential handling, data location, backups, incident responsibilities and access removal are defined before sensitive work begins.
